A ‘one hit wonder’ in America, Sleepy King was a singer and organist who’d recorded for Felsted, Sue and Symbol before moving over to the Joy label in 1961.
His best known song, “Pushin’ Your Luck” made # 27 on Billboard’s R & B chart and crossed over to ‘pop’, making # 92 on the Hot 100. King’s music had a distinctly New Orleans ‘feel’, though was probably recorded in New York. His follow-up record “Happy Music” c/w “It’s Written All Over Your Face” did well in several markets including Philadelphia, where the B side was the song that caught most attention. An accomplished organ player as well as singer Sleepy King’s real name was David Parker.
