THE BARBARIANS

*****
In the wake of The Beatles, several American groups adopted a similar look and sound in the hope of breaking into the charts and one of the was The Barbarians, Victor “Moulty” Moulton, Bruce Benson, Ronnie Enos, and Jerry Causi, four guys from Provincetown, a hundred miles south west of Boston on the top of Cape Cod. They were spotted playing and getting a huge reaction in a couple of home town clubs, The Rumpus Room and The Surf Club, and were introduced to Al Ham at Joy Records for whom they recorded their first single, ‘Hey Little Bird’ c/w ‘You’ve Got To Understand’ in late 1964. It would be the group’s only release on Joy, six months later they turned up on Laurie Records with ‘Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl’ and later with ‘Moulty’ on the same label, an autobiographical song about the group’s drummer losing his left hand. As drummer in the group he’d modified his hook-shaped prosthetic left hand in such a way that it could hold a drumstick.
